The Berghoff is a historic restaurant and bar in Chicago's loop. It has been run by the same family (the Berghoff's) since 1898 who immigrated to the US from Germany and started brewing German beer to sell at Chicago's World Fair of 1983. The fair was a huge success for the Berghoff family which prompted them to open a cafe where they sold beer for a nickel and gave away free sandwiches. The cafe changed to more of a restaurant during the prohibition and survived by selling their famous root beer! The Berghoff is also known for maintaining a separate men's only bar which operated long after other restaurants ended the practice. Thankfully, they finally woke up and now happily welcome men and women. I have yet to make it there for a meal, but I will! The Berghoff reviews on Yelp.
